The rickshaw drivers across Ahmedabad have threatened blockade of government offices if their long-pending demands are not met by the authorities.

They say that unresolved issues make them vulnerable to the discretionary power of authorities had their livelihood is affected.

Rajveer Upadhyay, president of Jagrut Autorickshaw Drivers Union, said authorities have been consistently turning a blind eye to their problems and in spite of promises, no actions is being taken on the ground.

These include implementation of the automatic rise in fares at regular intervals, clarity on overloads, setting up of rickshaw stands at railway station and airport, clarity on having a license to drive the rickshaw and having a badge and setting up of a welfare board among others.

“Our 20-odd demands have been pending since long. If the government does not resolve them, we will be forced to carry out a bandh or even a blockade. We will keep all our rickshaws at the offices of district Collector and the Commissioner of Police,” Upadhyay said in a letter to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and other authorities in the state.
