Gujarat High Court on Tuesday issued notices to Police Commissioner of the city, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and district collector over inadequate allocation of parking lots for rickshaw drivers in the city.

Jagrut Autorickshaw Drivers Union had filed a writ petition about two years ago regarding inadequate parking stands for rickshaw drivers in the city.

According to the petition, there are close to two lakh rickshaws in the city and there should be 25,000 auto-rickshaw stands for their parking. However, not enough of these have been provided by the authorities.

"Authorities had promised last year that 25,000 stands will be allocated, but only about 3,000 have been allocated so far," said Rajveer Upadhyay, the petitioner. He further said that the mode of allocation is also questionable.

Often the rickshaw stands are very close to each other that one cannot even differentiate between the two. "Say instead of having one stand of 20 rickshaws, there are two stands of 15 rickshaws and five rickshaws each, which makes no sense," said Upadhyay.

The petition had urged that rickshaw stands should be allocated to accommodate all rickshaws plying on the road in the city. Following the notice, to the government authorities will now have to file a reply.
