Friday saw two more instances of building collapse in the city, but fortunately, no casualties were reported. A 25-year-old man had a close shave, but was rescued by the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Department AFES). The buildings were in Jamalpur and Dariyapur, respectively, and the tragedy comes a day after a 72-year-old structure collapsed, killing five persons.

At around 10.15 am, the Fire Control Room received a call about a crisis at a three-storied home in Vadigam, Dariyapur — the front portion had collapsed. Luckily, the owners had vacated the structure a few years ago, and the only damage was to a rickshaw parked nearby that was crushed by the debris.

Even as the Fire Department teams were assessing the damage at Dariyapur and clear the area, says Chief Fire Officer MF Dastoor, the control room got another call at 11.55 am about a similar incident near Raj Hospital near Gaikwad Haveli in Jamalpur.

There too, the front portion of a two-storey building had crumbled and Abdul Salam Pathan was trapped in a blocked off staircase. "Our team was able to bring him to safety with the help of the ladder. The building was already dilapidated, and fortunately, there was no other casualty," said Dastoor.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the Amraiwadi building collapse climbed to five after two more bodies were recovered on Thursday night. "Our team was on the spot for two hours on Friday morning, clearing debris, to see if there was anyone trapped under. We found no one, " said Dastoor.
