A complaint was lodged with the cyber cell on Sunday by Regional Transport Office (RTO) authorities after the official license data of 84 applicants was found tampered with. Officials found out that on the old license data, new classes of vehicles were added by the accused.

As per the complaint, on December 28, assistant inspector R H Patel of the RTO got to know that on a public holiday when the RTO was not functional, some new entries had been made on the Sarathi software, which has the data of license holders.

During further investigation, it was revealed that on December 25 last year, a total of 81 new entries were made on old licenses, while on December 26, three more entries were found. Regarding the matter, a notice was issued to the clerk and inspector who were in charge of the system and they were asked to provide clarifications. But it was revealed that they had not updated or made any new entries during the holiday.

Regional Transport Officer SP Muniya of Ahmedabad said, "To make any changes, any entry in the data which is on the Sarathi software, only an authorised officer who has a password and the OTP can access the database. We suspect that the accused has hacked into the software from the outside or he must be someone from within the department itself. We have come to know the accused had tampered with the data of licenses which were issued before 2010."

According to the police, the Sarathi software has data of license holders who have been issued licenses after 2010.

HOW IT WAS DONE

  • RTO SP Muniya said: “For example, an applicant who only has a two-wheeler licence, had his data tampered with and three-wheeler class and four-wheeler class were added to his old licence”.

  • The 84 applicants, who are not eligible to drive a four-wheeler, have been given license to drive four-wheelers and heavy-load vehicles.
