60% of candidates in Gujarat have studied between class 5-12

Independent candidates are those with the highest number of criminal offences against them while Congress comes second in fielding those with criminal cases against them.

An analysis carried out by the Association for Democratic Reforms shows that of the 371 candidates contesting elections in Gujarat, 19% of them have studied only till class 8. In all, 72 candidates have mentioned their educational qualifications as up to class 8. Overall 60% of all the total candidates have studied between Class 5 and 12. Total 59 candidates have studied up to class 10 while 27 have a postgraduate degree. Merely three have a PhD while seven are illiterate and 19 are just literate.

If education details paint a grim picture then voters can take heart in the fact that the highest number of candidates contesting the polls are in the 31-40 age group (120) while the second highest number of candidates (87) are in the age group of 41-50.

Independent candidates are those with the highest number of criminal offences against them while Congress comes second in fielding those with criminal cases against them. Total 34 independent candidates have criminal offences registered against them while 10 in Congress and 4 candidates of BJP also figure in this category. While eight of the 10 candidates of Congress have serious criminal offences against them all four of BJP's candidates have serious criminal cases registered against them. In all, 58 candidates have criminal offences registered against them of which only two are women.

BJP is the party with the highest number of crorepati candidates (24) while Congress comes second with 23 such candidates. Majority of crorepati candidates are in Central Gujarat (23) followed by Saurashtra (20).

The average wealth of a BJP candidate is Rs 11 crore while it is Rs 8 crore for Congress. Among the top 10 candidates in the state with the highest income, eight of them belong to the ruling BJP while the rest are with the Congress. Ramesh Dhaduk of BJP who is contesting from Porbandar is the one with the highest liability amounting to Rs 21 crore.

As far as liabilities are concerned, BJP has three candidates who figure into list of top 10 candidates with liabilities while all the rest belong to Congress. Of the top 10 candidates with liabilities, BJP has just three while Congress has the rest. Total 32 candidates have not mentioned their pan numbers.
