54 students across country solve social challenges in Ahmedabad

About 54 college students from across the country brought solutions to the issues faced by society as part of the 5th summer innovation programme organised by Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI). The students, who will be housed in Ahmedabad for a month, will solve social challenges through creative efforts.

This year the theme of the programme was electronic sensor based products for women, children, elderly and other social segments, mechanical engineering based devices for urban poor, workers/small farmers in farm/non-farm sector, processing, construction, handloom, crafts, designing applications, seeking and spreading innovative ideas on farm trials, social diffusion of innovations, natural product lab, etc.

The students aged 17-26 and belonged to institutions like IITs, NIT’s, BITS Pilani, Gujarat Technological University (GTU), etc designed ergonomic and efficient Chula, automated smart repellent system, Braille slate, detection of toxic gas for salt farmers, Honey Bee Network application, load carrying device for bricks, Nilgai detection and prevention system, underground brine detection before well digging in Rann of Kutch, weed cultivator modification, etc.

A group of seven students from Maharashtra, Orissa and Gujarat tapped on the issue frequently faced by farmers here in the state. They developed a Nilgai detection and prevention system. Speaking about the innovation, Nikita Patil from SNDT Women’s university in Mumbai said, “As part of the summer programme, we were asked to do a field visit and understand issues of farmers.”
