Almost 39% of school students from the state were found to have an unhealthy body-mass index (BMI). This alarming stats was revealed in a nation-wide study carried out by a physical education provider Edusports in 18 states in the year 2012-13.
The findings are based on a survey spanning 104 schools in 54 cities across India covered more than 49,000 kids in the age group of 7-17 years. Of these over 1,600 students are from the state.
The report states that of the unhealthy children in Gujarat, most are found to be overweight than underweight. So much so, that overweight levels in the state are 21.1% higher than the national average of 18 states. On the other hand, the number of underweight kids in the state is 30.4% lower than the rest of India, the study reveals.
The study pegs the quantum of students in Gujarat with healthy BMI at 61.1%, while the remaining 38.9% comprises unhealthy students. It states that 24.1% students from Gujarat are overweight as against the national average of 19.94%, while the percentage of underweight students here – 14.8% – is much below the national average of 19.31%.
According to the study, 99.6% students across the country have acceptable levels of endurance, which is a shade lower in Gujarat at 98.4%. The study also covers other aspects of fitness such as ananerobic capacity, flexibility, lower & upper body strength as well as abdominal strength.
“Gujarat is seen to be doing very well in terms of the BMI. However, it lags behind other states in terms of upper, lower body strength and endurance parameters,” observed CEO and co-founder of EduSports, Saumil Majmudar.
He further said that football is fast catching up to cricket as the sport of choice for school kids in Gujarat. “Overall, the interest in sports has been on the rise with many sports-based offerings now available for kids, which was not the case a few years ago.
The state government also has a few initiatives which helped increase the interest-levels in sports in Gujarat,” he added.
