The list of applicants includes several well-known names from the high court legal circle such as GM Joshi, Anand Yagnik, Devang Nanavati, Jal Unwalla, and Asim Pandya. Interestingly, the list also features the name of public prosecutor Mitesh Amin.

All matters related to the designation of senior advocates in the high court is dealt by a committee headed by the Chief Justice and comprising of two senior-most judges of the high court, advocate general, and a member of the bar nominated by the committee members. Interestingly, the high court administration has framed the High Court of Gujarat-Designation of Senior Advocates Rules, 2018, in pursuance of the directions issued by the Supreme Court. This time, the seniority tag will be conferred based on the 2018 rules.

Although the Gujarat High Court has a strong bar of over 2,000 lawyers, there are only 43 designated senior advocates practicing in the court. While the senior advocates 'officially' do not have any specific advantage, their status is reflected in the respect and recognition they command from the bar and the bench.
