An email to almighty regarding dried Nal Sarovar

The productivity of those wetlands decline which remain well-watered for years without experiencing a good dry phase

O God! Why have you kept our Nal Sarovar — The only Ramsar Site in Gujarat — almost waterless this winter! Didn't you know that this is the peak of wintering season of migratory waterbirds? You did not even take care of the "earning season" of local people who economically depend on tourists visiting Nal Sarovar for enjoying boating in the company of migratory waterbirds. And you have not given "wisdom" to the authorities managing Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary; the "wisdom" of releasing water from some external source!

All right, if you have done all these things, then do something more! Please give some sense to my people that since ancient time, the wetlands created by you (i.e. natural wetlands) are destined to go through extended period of dryness once or twice in a decade or so. Give them understanding that you have planned "no pain, no gain" formula for the well-being of natural wetlands. Many people willfully undergo extended fasting (a kind of pain) for better health after the fasting period (a kind of gain). Similarly, it is your plan that every natural wetland should go through an extended "fasting period" (i.e., extended dry period) mainly through scarcity of rainfall or extended drought period. This Nal Sarovar had gone completely dry in the past too (e.g., in the late 1980s).

God, please give insight to my folks that Nal Sarovar is a special, fresh-cum-brackish water wetland. It is not a conventional man-made waterbody wherein waters from any external water sources can be "dumped" for satisfying recreation or economic needs of man. For satisfying such human needs, we can create an artificial reservoir ("Mini-Nal") somewhere (on the way) between Nal Sarovar and Sanand or Bavla! God, my brethren do not know that similar to tropical rainforests, wetlands are also well-known as one of the most productive ecosystems and this high productivity is a result of dynamic nature of its waters. The shifts between flooded and dry states make wetlands dynamic and that very dynamic nature leads to high productivity.

The productivity of those wetlands decline which remain well-watered for years without experiencing a good dry phase. A wetland which holds waters continuously year after year often imposes an adverse impact on the growth of its vegetation — the very base of food-chains of the wetland ecosystem(e.g. Nal Sarovar) which include magnificent migratory birds too.

Drying of wetland for extended period gives chance to the innumerable dormant seeds of aquatic plants buried in the bottom muds to germinate and grow and as a result, the base of the food chains gets strengthened.
