The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is implementing several new initiatives as per the guidelines of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). As per the latest edition of requirements, the civic body has started collecting food waste separately and turning it into organic compost.

There are 60 marks for the category of total wet waste collected and treated, either by decentralised or centralised processing, as mentioned by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the SBM. The civic body has already initiated the process and it will be replicated in all wards gradually.

The project is currently running in 25 societies as a unique concept. In place of trash, the societies are getting back organic compost, a week later. Mobitrash, a company which has a mobile organic waste converter machine, is collecting the waste.

"We have started collecting food or wet waste from 25 societies since August 15. Initially, we were getting only 50kg of waste, but that has now moved up to 800kg a day. The machine takes segregated waste and treats it for bacterial culture and odour control," said Amrut Rathod, an executive of Mobitrash.

"It takes a further 10 days to purify and turn into compost. We get 30 per cent of compost per kilogram of water. If the societies need the compost, we are giving it back to them," added Rathod.

While the project is still in a pilot stage, later, it will be implemented in each ward and at that time, the service seeker has to pay the service provider.

"This project is on pilot basis. After studying, we will extend it to other wards. We haven't decided the rate of the waste or compost. That will be decided before starting it on a full-fledged basis," said Mukesh Gadhvi, deputy municipal commissioner, AMC.

COMPOST COMPOSED

Mobitrash is working on similar projects in Pune and Surat. In Surat, big malls and commercial units are also conver-ting their waste into compost via the treatment system. While the project is still in a pilot stage, later, it will be implemented in each ward.
