The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested Suresh Nair, an accused in the 2007 Ajmer dargah blast case. He was on the run for the past 11 years and was held in Bharuch, after ATS officers received a tip-off that he was going to visit Shuklatirth, a religious place on the bank of Narmada river.

Notably, Nair is accused of supplying the bombs to the planters used in the October 11, 2007, attack at the Khwaja Chishti shrine in Rajasthan that resulted in three deaths, whereas 17 persons got injured. Nair was one of the three absconding accused in the case and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the matter, had declared a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his arrest. The other two absconding accused include Sandeep Dange and Ramchandra.

After being apprehended from Bharuch , he was shifted to Ahmedabad for further investigation. Nair, a resident of Thasara in Kheda district, will be handed over to NIA for further investigation. ATS in a statement said: "Officials of Gujarat ATS had received a credible information that Nair will visit Shuklatirth in Bharuch in the near future. Thereafter, a close watch was kept at the place and Nair was apprehended from the spot".

Interestingly, a special NIA court in Jaipur had in March 2017 acquitted key accused in the case Swami Aseemanand and six others, providing them the benefit of the doubt. Those who got relief from the NIA court included Harshad Solanki, Lokesh Sharma, Mehul Kumar, Mukesh Vasani, Bharat Bhai and Chandrashekhar.

On the contrary, three others—Devendra Gupta, Bhavesh Patel, and Sunil Joshi--were handed life imprisonment. They were convicted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Explosive Substances Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). However, in August, Bhavesh Patel of Bharuch and Devendra Gupta of Ajmer were granted bail by the Rajasthan High Court after they contended before the court that they had been convicted on the basis of human probability, circumstantial evidence and conjectures.
