The journal, Ruia Minds, seeks to inculcate a culture of research in the undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Though it has been started as an in house journal where students and faculty can contribute, gradually, the journal aims to publish papers by students and teachers from across colleges in the city.Suhas Pednekar, principal, Ruia College, feels that focus on research is the need of the hour.

“We do not have a strong culture of research, especially in the undergraduate studies, compared to western countries. Research is an important part of academia which should not be ignored. We wanted to change this and create a strong body of research on various subjects. Our faculty is also encouraging undergraduate students to write papers on their areas of interest,’’ Pednekar said.

The college has a strong tradition of research. On an average, it publishes 25 papers in national conferences and close to 15 papers in international conferences every year.

“This will also help them be better prepared for their higher studies. Also, many students are going abroad for their PG these days, so they need to be equipped to conduct research because that is the main focus of foreign universities,’’ said Devyani Ganpule, vice principal of the college.

The college has recently received many grants like FIST and has been awarded ‘Star College’ status by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi.
