Fourteen years ago, she lost her only son to fighting insurgents in Kashmir. Instead of letting the loss weigh her down, Anuradha Gore, mother of late Captain Vinayak Gore, a resident of Vile Parle (east), has embarked on a mission to make more heroes like her son.

Every vacation since Vinayak’s death, Gore, the feisty, now retired principal of Parle Tilak Vidyalay and Podar School (Marathi medium), holds camps and gives lectures in various schools to inspire teenagers to join the Armed Forces. The camps aim for overall development of the children, personality and academics included.

“Considering the vast opportunities available, not many students are keen to join this profession. So, we try to inspire a patriotic feeling by holding skits, plays and talks by ex-servicemen about their tenure in the services and the importance to uphold national security. We also share information on how one can join the Armed Forces,’’ said Gore. Her efforts have not gone in vain. At least three to four students join the Armed Forces every year after attending her camps.

Gore’s 26-year-old son died on September 25, 1995, battling insurgents at his post near Kupwara. He was the first officer from Mumbai to die in Operation Rakshak. Born to Vishnu and Anuradha Gore, Vinayak was greatly inspired by Shivaji Maharaj and Veer Savarkar. He represented NM College at inter-college football meets.

Vinayak was so excited about joining the army that he left his articleship halfway to appear for the Combined Defence Service Examinations.

Not only this, Gore is involved in improving the academic standards of poor students of classes V and VI at Paranjpe Vidyalay (Marathi medium) in Andheri east. She has prepared innovative techniques to teach English and Mathematics to academically-weak students and make the subjects comprehensible.
