The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is developing a foreign students information system to monitor the activities of those coming from other countries to study here.

A letter issued by the MHA states that it is implementing Mission Mode Project on Immigration, Visa and Foreigners Registration & Tracking under the National e-Governance Plan. “The core objective of the project is to improve facilitation to foreigners and enhance security,” stated the letter.

The module is to be implemented across India by March 31, 2013. The project is being rolled out in Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Amritsar, Kolkata, Kochi, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, Lucknow and Goa.

Colleges and universities will have to fill particulars of foreign students, using a software module developed by MHA. “Mumbai is one of the popular study destinations, especially for the undergraduate programmes,” said Father Frazer Mascarenhas, principal of St Xavier’s College, Fort.
