Over 6,000 people from Gujarat have already registered for IIT Bombay's annual International Science and Technology festival, 'Techfest'. The festival from January 6 till January 8 will feature over 150 different events.

Last year 4,500 people participated from Gujarat. This year, with the registrations still going on, 6,000 people have already registered. Various colleges and institutes including NIT Surat and NIRMA Institute of Technology will also participate.

Conceptualised in 1998, the festival has the patronage of UNESCO. Last years the tally reached 85,000. This year with 140 international exhibits from 16 countries, organisers are hopeful that the numbers will increase. The highlight of the event is 'Ummeed-e-Milaap'. The event, in partnership with LUMS-Spades, Lahore, AIESEC Karachi and FAST Karachi will unite students from both the nations. A diary which is already circulating among 30 colleges in Mumbai and

20 in Pakistan will have writings by the students. This diary will be unveiled on January 6 in the Techfest and in Pakistan, on January 18 at LUMS Psifi Lahore.

Techfest 2012 will also feature events such as the Last Supper in 3D, allowing the viewers to inspect the canvas from all angles. A series of humanoid robots will also be on display in NAO Robot display.

Main speakers for the lecture series include Nobel laureate Venkataraman Ramakrishnan, also a Padma Bhushan, who will talk on molecular biology. Karlheinz Bradenburg, inventor of Mp3 and MPEG will talk about his invention. The festival’s social initiative-WAVE India is a road show covering 2,500 km of southern India. Indian metros, the journey will begin in Mumbai and travel to cities including Pune and Hyderabad.
