Choosing the correct stream after Class X is probably the most important decision that a student takes towards building a successful career, and given the importance attached to this decision, there is a lot of pressure on students.

In order to ease this pressure, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to start counselling students at the high-school level to help them understand what subjects or stream they can opt for after Class X.

The counsellors will sit with students to understand their preferences, and explain the scope of each stream.

The decision was taken in a recent meeting of the board where the proposal was discussed in detail and all the stakeholders including officials from the Ministry of HRD and CBSE present agreed to the idea.

“We have decided to go ahead with counselling of students at the high school level. This counselling will be provided by counsellors that are facilitated by schools,” a senior official from HRD Ministry said.

While private schools already have student counsellors who guide them on various issues from behavioural to personal and study related aspects, the challenge for the government is to make the counselling available for students in government schools.

“We are still working on the number of counsellors that we will require to conduct these sessions in schools at a national level,” the official added.

After Class X, students are required to choose between Science, Commerce, and Arts for further studies. While an initial window of six months is provided to a student, if at all s/he wants to change the stream, it is not possible after Class XI.

Officials at the CBSE received a lot of feedback from teachers about students who were not able to cope up after choosing a particular stream because of either family pressure or peer pressure. After going through the feedback, the board decided to conduct counselling sessions to help students.

“Those who are clear that they want to pursue medical, engineering or a career in finance in the future are clear about their subjects; but those who are not fully aware often end up choosing something under pressure and later regret it. Therefore, counselling will be helpful,” said a teacher at a Delhi school.
