In a time when racial hatred is at its peak in America, Angad Singh, a 23-year-old Indian-American, bravely spoke against it in the most unique way.

He tied his turban in the middle of New York's famed Times Square, as he recited slam poetry, paying tribute to 66-year-old Timothy Caughman who was stabbed to death with a 26-inch sword on 20 March, 2017.

The sword was in the hand of 28-year-old white US Army veteran James Jackson. Jackson, a self-proclaimed white supremacist, turned himself to the police and said he considered the killing to be "practice prior to going to Times Square to kill additional black men," according to the complaint.

He was initially charged with second degree murder as a hate crime, but his charges were upgraded on March 27 to an act of terrorism according to a report

Angad said in the video that he stood at Times Square to tie his turban and honour Timothy Caughman,"Every day when I put on my turban, I am putting myself in hate's way. But I am not scared because putting on my turban is the most American thing I can do."

He said in the video that he went to Times Square because he was terrorised by the senseless violence that surrounds him, but adding that talking to New Yorkers reassured him.

He ended his video with a positive message, "Love will always trump hate."

In 2016, Angad posted a similar video, it was to honour 49 year-old Balbir Singh and his brother who were both shot in a series of racially motivated attacks after 9/11.

The underlying message in both his videos is to not be ignorant, and that if people got to know each other better, racial hate would eventually end.
