The fiery fury of Eyjafjallajökull
Eyjafjallajökull began to erupt on March 20 in the form of a fissure vent, which by April 14 caused meltwater floods to rush down nearby rivers in Iceland, requiring 800 people to be evacuated.
The eruption threw volcanic ash several kilometres up into the atmosphere which led to disruption of air travel in northwest Europe for six days, including the closure of airspace over many parts of Europe. The eruption also created electrical storms. The volcano continues to have several earthquakes daily.
