Two key meetings were reportedly held in the Pakistan Presidency late on Tuesday after President Asif Ali Zardari summoned his country’s smbassador to the US back to Islamabad.

Ambassador Husain Haqqani has officially been called to deliver a ‘briefing on Pak-US ties’, but his arrival in Islamabad will coincide with a deepening controversy of alleged back-channel contacts between the Pakistan’s civilian leadership and US high officials, aparently brokered by a Pakistani-American ‘businessman’, the Express Tribune reports.

Reports suggest that one of the meetings was with the Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, which was held a day after the army chief did not attend a presidential dinner in honour of the visiting Turkmenistan President.

The Presidency issued a single-sentence statement after the meeting, saying that the “current security situation and professional matters pertaining to Pakistan Army were discussed during the meeting.”

The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) refused to give any details about the meeting, saying that only the President is the right person to comment on the issue.

According to some media reports, none of the three services chiefs were present at Monday’s official dinner hosted for the Turkmen President.

The other key meeting that reportedly took place at the Aiwan-e-Sadr was between Zardari and US Ambassador Cameron Munter. That meeting also produced only a single-line statement from the presidency, leaving people unsure about the actual topic of discussion there.

Reports however suggested that it was related to the summoning of Haqqani to Islamabad.
