Punters have a reason to rejoice because wine is apparently cheaper than water and Coke in Australia.

Woolworths' large-format liquor chain Dan Murphy's was offering 82,000 750ml cleanskins at the price of 1.99 dollars apiece as compared to 2.25 dollars for Pump 750ml water bottles and 3.07 dollars for 600ml of Coca-Cola.

"In my 15 years in the wine industry I can't remember a time when drinkers enjoyed better value for money," the Daily Telegraph quoted Dan Murphy's merchandise manager Steve Donohue as saying.

Donohue added: "You are paying less and getting just as good quality."

The pain for some or gain for others was accorded to a grape glut, surging Australian dollar and changing tastes.

According to Bureau of Statistics data, the volume of Australian wine exported fell 11 per cent last year and a new winery was being opened every two days.

The over-supply was being exported in last few years but the rising Australian dollar had not made it easy with the market facing competition from those in Chile, Argentina and South Africa.
