Suspected Taliban militants have set a school on fire in Afghanistan, Xinhua reported Saturday.

The incident took place Friday night in Badghis province, over 550km from Kabul, provincial administration spokesman Sharafudin Majidi said.

A major portion of the school building, stationery and textbooks were destroyed, he said.

Girls from several villages attended the school in the morning while boys attended it in the afternoon, the official said.

Damage to the school would deprive the pupils from education at least for several months needed to rebuild it.

The Taliban did not make any comments.
