Taiwan finds first radioactivity from Japan in air

Taiwan has found low levels of radioactive iodine 131 from Japan's stricken nuclear plant in air samples from the island's north, its nuclear energy body said, but the levels do not pose any health risk.

It is the first finding in Taiwan since the disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant, but amounted to 510,000 of the radiation given off by one chest X-ray, the Atomic Energy Council said late on Thursday.

The finding prompted the Taipei city government to announce on Friday it would step up testing of imported foods in the city's supermarkets and stores.

The council is already separately monitoring all imported goods from Japan.
