Suu Kyi's party says won't stand in Myanmar poll

Myanmar's biggest opposition party said on Monday it would not register for this year's election, meaning the party of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi will not be allowed any role in the military-led political process.                                           

"After a vote of the committee of members, the NLD party has decided not to register as a political party because the election laws are unjust," National League for Democracy (NLD) spokesman Nyan Win told reporters.                                           

The NLD, which won the last election in 1990 but was never allowed to rule, is outraged by what it says is a constitution that offers little real power to elected civilians.                                           

Divisions had emerged in the party between advocates of a boycott and modernisers worried the NLD would be a spent force if it didn't run.
