The Pakistani-American arrested in connection with Saturday's failed Times Square car bombing was of Kashmiri descent, but it is not known if he was affiliated with any terrorist group, a source familiar with the investigation said today.
The source, who asked not to be named because the issue is sensitive, said the suspect, Faisal Shahzad, was born in 1979 and was from the disputed Kashmir region.
He had been in the United States for some time.
"Which group he may have belonged to and how he became radicalised, we don't know yet," the source said. "He is Kashmiri by ethnicity."
