Sri Lankan guards kill prisoner during riot

Prison guards opened fire to break up a riot at a jail in north-central Sri Lanka today, killing at least one inmate and wounding another 20.

A prison official said guards were forced to use live ammunition as the prisoners sparked fires inside the Anudahapura prison demanding better living conditions.

The Anuradhapura hospital said 21 remand prisoners were rushed there and most of them had gunshot injuries.

One of them succumbed to his injuries.
