Sikhs in Malaysia celebrated the arrival of the new year with prayers at home and gurdwara.

As per the Nanakshahi calendar, named after the founder of the faith Guru Nanak, most Sikhs conducted prayers to welcome the month of Chet, the first month in the calendar,The Star reported.

More Sikhs are becoming conscious of the Sikh new year, although the Vasakhi celebrations are more well-known.

"Vasakhi is the day the Khalsa, or baptised Sikhs, were first formed. It is a religious occasion as well as a harvest festival for farmers in India. People are often confused because many communities from India have their new year around the same time in April," Manjeet Singh was quoted as saying by The Star.

The occasion also marked the birthday of the seventh prophet of the Sikhs, Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji.

An estimated 100,000 Sikh population is in Malaysia.
