A Sikh student and a standout athlete died in a road accident in San Jose California in the US when his speeding vehicle smashed into a tree on Sunday morning.

Sukhpreet Singh Grewal, 18, was a two-year varsity starter at Pioneer High School and earned all-league honors as a senior.

He was taking classes at De Anza College and recently told friends he was considering trying out for the junior college team.

"Tuesday morning, more than 800 people had logged onto a Facebook page set up to remember Grewal's life. People had posted photos of Grewal laughing with friends and playing basketball for Pioneer," Mercury News reported.

California Highway Patrol reported that Grewal's GMC Yukon was "traveling at a high rate of speed".

He was wearing a seat belt, though, the police said.

Community members said Sukhpreet was coming from a friend's place when he met with the accident.
