Sri Lanka's former top military general and war hero Sarath Fonseka, who is likely to enter election fray against president Mahinda Rajapaksa, is contemplating moving court to seek a larger security cover.

Fonseka, who quit following differences with Rajapaksa, is upset over being denied a larger security cover as also on being ordered to vacate his official bungalow.

General (retd) Fonseka will file a fundamental rights case this week requesting for more security personnel in his security contingent, the LakbimaNews reported.

Fonseka, who resigned from his post last week, said: "Yes I am contemplating going to court over my security cover," the newspaper said.

The government has reportedly allowed Fonseka to pick his security contingent and to release officers and men requested by him. It has also released a bullet proof car for his use.

Fonseka had been offered 25 security men as an initial measure comprising eight soldiers in each shift, the Lakbima news said.

It is reported that he had requested for 100 security personnel from Rajapaksa when he met the latter recently, but the government has given him 62 security personnel including two officers, 10 commandos and 50 Sinha regiment soldiers.

"He (Fonseka) has said that of the 62 security men he could use about 20 soldiers on a shift and that the security squad was not enough to meet the threat to his life," the newspaper said.

The newspaper said Fonseka has opened his election office in the heart of Colombo and is soon likely to have a campaign manager in the event of announcement of presidential polls.

Fonseka, who may have to vacate his official residence, has also sought an alternative shelter of his choice, a report said.

Asked if he might seek legal action against those responsible for his housing problem, Fonseka replied: "I might," the Sunday Leader reported.

Fonseka was asked to vacate his official residence but he had said there are practical problems in obtaining a rented house as people had been threatened against renting to him.

Fonseka presided over the Sri Lankan Army's military victory over the LTTE, and was named by an alliance of opposition parties as their consensus presidential candidate in the event of an early election.
