Justice Rajinder Sachar and eminent journalist Kuldip Nayar today urged Pakistan to ensure that Asma Jahangir is given "every protection" after the human rights campaigner alleged that its military establishment was planning to assassinate her.

Sachar and Nayar also called upon the international community to exercise maximum pressure on Pakistan to ensure that Jahangir is safe and able to continue her work unhindered.

"We call upon the government of Pakistan to ensure that threats to Ms Jahangir are thoroughly investigated in a transparent manner," they said in a statement

"All those who are guilty of being involved in plans to unlawfully attack or liquidate Jahangir must be punished at the earliest irrespective of their rank, position or affiliation to state agencies and institutions," they said.

Jahangir yesterday alleged that Pakistan's military establishment had made plans to assassinate her. "Top security agencies have made plans to assassinate me. But I want to tell them that I am not afraid of them. I will not leave Pakistan," Jahangir said yesterday.

Expressing solidarity with her and emphasising that her contributions are of immense importance to human rights, they said, they were in no doubt that her work on "abuses by the Pakistani security establishment" has created the current threat to her life.

Sachar and Nayar also said that Jahangir's case was an indication of larger patterns of human rights violations and impunity in Pakistan and called upon the UN Human Rights Council to address this in its upcoming session.

"In this regard, we urge both the UN special Rapporteurs on extrajudicial killings and human rights defenders to urgently look into this matter," they said.
