Pakistani security forces foiled an attempt to smuggle weapons and explosives into the country from Afghanistan and seized a large cache of arms, officials said today.
The seizure by the Khasadar militia was the largest ever reported from the troubled Khyber tribal region.
The value of the confiscated weapons is over Rs300 million, Shafeerullah Khan, the top administrator of Khyber Agency, told reporters.
The cache included 366 cartons of 14.5mm rifles, 680 cartons of 12.7mm rifles, hundreds of missile fuses, 1,089 shells of 85mm, nine shells of 60mm, 54 shells of 82mm, nine rocket launchers, and over 3,000 anti-tanks shells.
Two vehicles carrying the weapons were apprehended by the Khasadar personnel after a brief chase yesterday.
The drivers and other persons in the cars managed to escape.
Khan gave Rs50,000 as a reward to a Khasadar official for foiling the smuggling bid.
"We are determined to dismantle the network of terrorists in Khyber Agency come what may," he said.
The local administration had information about the smuggling of arms from Afghanistan.
"We made all arrangements to foil the attempt," Khan said.
