The selection of Hakimullah Mehsud as the new ameer of the Tehrik-e-Taliban is giving sleepless nights to the Pakistani army.

Relatively little is known about the ascendant young leader. Still, reports suggest Pakistan and US may have rid themselves of one problem only to gain another.

Baitullah Mehsud’s successor is known for his cruelty. He has led dozens of major terrorist operations against the Pakistani forces and on supply trucks destined for Afghanistan, catapulting him among the ranks of the Pakistani Taliban.

TTP sources say despite his young age, the battle-hardened Hakimullah was unanimously elected as the new TTP chief because of his proximity with Baitullah Mehsud, extraordinary military skills, personal charisma and leadership abilities.

Pakistani officials had recently issued conflicting reports as to whether Hakimullah was alive; sources suggested he had been killed in a shootout during a Taliban meeting convened to decide on Baitullah’s successor.

Some suspect the man calling himself Hakimullah is an impostor claiming to be the chief to convince the world that the group’s fractious leadership remained intact.
