A 46-year-old Chinese woman who angered local government officials with her repeated protests has claimed she was tied down and forcibly sterilised in an act of revenge.

Mao Yuanchun, a farmer in the southern town of Huangqiao, Jiangxi province, had crossed her local Communist party by petitioning for justice after the death of her daughter.

Mao's younger daughter fell to her death from a fourth floor window during a fight with her boyfriend, who had been ordered to pay 40,000 yuan (pounds 4,000) in compensation. "We were not happy. We wanted the court to jail him," she said.

Mao went to the county government and then to the provincial government to petition for the case to be reopened. Her husband made a second visit on March 12. She said: "On March 20, more than 20 men came to my house. I did not know them all."

The officials, including Luo Guoqing, the deputy Communist party secretary of the town, took her to the local family planning clinic. She said they forced her to have an examination "then they said they were going to sterilise me".

Mao said her elder daughter was told the procedure would be halted if the family promised to drop their petitions. She declined the deal, asking the local officials to resolve their family's case.

"They lifted me on to the bed by my legs. Two men tied my feet and hands. They gave me an anaesthetic but it did not work, it did not last long and I was in pain," she said.

She was discharged and travelled to Beijing to protest at her treatment. A security guard stopped her near Tiananmen Square and told her to return home. On her return, an official offered to pay her medical bills and 35 yuan (pounds 3.50) for every day she was unable to work.

Attempts to contact Luo for comment failed. Attempts to contact the family planning committee also failed.
