The 1,100-square-foot L-shaped garden includes spinach, assorted types of lettuce, herbs along with dill, oregano and rosemary - onions, shallots, cucumbers, peppers and peas.

The First Lady will be planting tomato vines in about three weeks. She will also be adding blueberries to her kitchen garden"by June".

Michelle was joined by group of 25 children from Bancroft Elementary School for the inaugural plantings.

A strong advocator of fresh and healthy food, Michelle advised the kids to eat more fruit and vegetables.

"It does have nutrients, it does make you strong, it is all brain food," the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

She said the garden was also "real inexpensive", costing no more than 200 dollars, and would yield "a ton of stuff."

"We can produce enough fruits and vegetables to feed us for years and years to come, for just a couple of hundred dollars," she said.
