A magnitude-6 earthquake hit near the east coast of Japan's Honshu island early Friday, but there were no reports of any casualties or damages.

The quake occurred at 2.36 am (1836 GMT Thursday), Xinhua reported citing the Hong Kong Observatory.

The epicentre was located about 130 km south of Sendai.
