ISLAMABAD: In a bid to distance himself from Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, alleged mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks, the Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Mohammad Saeed has conveyed to the Pakistani authorities that the two had developed serious differences three years ago when Lakhvi had revolted against him and launched his own splinter group with the name of Khairun Naas.

According to Hafiz Saeed’s close circles, having turned against him a few years ago,
some of the rebel members of the splinter group led by Zaki and largely consisting of LeT had even taken an oath to assassinate him. Saeed has informed the Pakistani authorities after being placed under house arrest in Lahore that he first came under fire from Zaki when he decided to launch JuD and separated the LeT infrastructure from the JuD.

Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, being the chief operational commander of the Lashkar, disapproved of the decision, saying it was meant to put the JuD in control of all funds collected locally and abroad. The dissidents within the LeT felt that as heavy donations were being collected in the name of Jehad-e-Kashmir from all over Pakistan as well as from abroad, the JuD leadership had no right to the money because it was only a preaching organisation.

As Hafiz Saeed failed to satisfy Zaki Lakhvi and his comrades, they subsequently decided to launch Khairun Naas, principally comprising Lashkar commanders and fighters, most of whom were based in Muzaffarabad. According to a close associate of Lakhvi, Khairun Naas and the LeT were basically the same, but as LeT had been banned in Pakistan, the new group was named Khairun Naas. Interestingly, however, Lakhvi’s close associates say Khairun Naas leaders were basically annoyed at Hafiz Saeed’s second marriage to a fallen Mujahid’s 28-year old widow. Saeed was 64 at the time of his marriage and had maintained that the marriage was only meant to provide shelter to the widow of the Mujahid who lost his life in J&K and had left behind two kids. But the country’s intelligence circles say Hafiz Saeed and Zaki Lakhvi had mended fences way back in 2005 after the intervention of their handlers and they were best of friends at the time of the Mumbai terror attacks.
