TOKYO: A 42-year-old schoolteacher has been arrested for having sex with her 16-year-old former student, police said Monday, in what a television network called a "forbidden romance" that made her leave her family.

Noriko Shimomura, a mother of three and music teacher at a publicly funded junior high school in southern Saga city, was arrested last week while she was in a car with a boy the age of her eldest child.

"They looked just normal - just like the mother and son given their age difference," said a police spokesman in Takeo, another southern city where she was arrested.

"She admitted to having been with the boy for several days. She said they had been involved since March," he said.

The boy was one of her students until he graduated from school in March.    Her school's principal,

Mikio Nakamura, told a news conference last week "she just had a vacant look and said she was sorry."

Asahi television described the pair as being in a 'forbidden romance,' spending nights at hotels in spa resorts.

She disappeared from school on September 20 and her husband filed a missing-person application with the police five days later. She and the boy were caught at a police checkpoint on Thursday.

Shimomura was arrested on charges of having sex with a minor. Having sex with a person under 18 is punishable with fines of up to 500,000 yen (4,300 dollars) or imprisonment of up to two years under local law.

A former student of Shimomura's told the Asahi network that she was provocative in the classroom.

"She... made the boys feel her abdomen during a chorus class, saying 'you should move your muscles like this,'" the female student said.
