Sri Lanka's northern district of Jaffna, devastated by over three decades of war, will soon be linked to the national power grid ensuring uninterrupted supply, a top minister has said.

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said once the project is completed, the entire north would receive power from the national grid.

"We are aware that Jaffna public currently endure power stoppages. We would soon have the Jaffna peninsula and the entire north linking the national grid," Rajapaksa said.

He said the work is currently in progress in the transmission line of Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Chunnakam.

Jaffna residents currently suffer regular power interruptions, a legacy from the decades-old conflict when the fighting between the government and the LTTE caused destruction to the infrastructure.

Since the Army gained control of Jaffna from LTTE in 1995 the city came to be powered by generators.

But the supply was never enough.
