The Pakistani foreign minister said the response of the world community, which is facing recession, was "very encouraging".
The world has poured over $800 million in relief funds to flood-ravaged Pakistan with more aid coming in after UN pitched in to support victims of the country's worst natural disaster, foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said today.
The "overwhelming" response of the international community came after the United Nations appealed for $460 million energency relief during the special session of the UN General Assembly, which Qureshi attended.
More than 40 countries announced pledges amounting to $254.5 million at the special session of the UN General Assembly, bringing the aid total since the natural disaster struck Pakistan to $815.59 million, he said in a press conference here.
The Pakistani foreign minister said the response of the world community, which is facing recession, was "very encouraging".
He said the General Assembly meeting, convened on August 19, served the purpose of creating awareness among UN member states about the unprecedented national disaster that has uprooted more than 20 million people and caused huge economic losses besides posing a host of new challenges.
Referring to his interaction with international media in New York, Qureshi said all world channels are highlighting the floods situation and helping Pakistan to generate funds.
He said, the American newspaper are also writing editorials in this regard.
The minister also interacted with Pakistani community and other NGOs to motivate them for highlighting the sufferings of the people who affected due to these floods.
Qureshi said he met EU representative after which it agreed to give more access to Pakistan in trade in EU countries to help the nation to promote its exports.
