ShareMUMBAI: Hemant Mehta, 22, a maths student from Chicago's DePaul University, has created a stir by eBaying his soul. The self-professed atheist sought online bids to convert his beliefs. His offer: "Send an atheist to the local church."
The winning bid, of $504, was from Seattle's Jim Henderson. The February 3 bid was as wacky as the offer. What Henderson, a former evangelical minister, proposed was spiritually simple: that Mehta should attend 15 services and write about them on Henderson's website. The services, of course, would be chosen by Jim. It was perhaps one, easy, way to get Mehta interested in God.
"So far, I have attended 5 services and may do more if there's interest in there," says Mehta. His unusual auction has not only featured in the Wall Street Journal, it has triggered a debate in the blogosphere too.
Mehta interacted with DNA on email from Chicago, explaining why he bid his soul and whether he could turn into a believer.
