Google's expensive refurbishment of its London office, which now includes a music jamming room and sci-fi-themed break-out has apparently been done to retain its highly talented and skilled employees.

According to a report by The Telegraph, the value of a retained engineer to Google is enormous, they are at the heart of everything the company does, and they are at the heart too of a war for talent with Facebook and Twitter.

Nelson Mattos, Vice President for Product and Engineering, recently said that the company's "engineers are generating ideas and products that all of us, as well as millions of people the world over, use and benefit from every day."

According to the report, the unique changes to the office have been done as Google needs to keep hold these talented engineers now more than ever.

Retaining employees with extraordinary buildings and free food than it is with burgeoning wages, the paper said.

Mattos also said that the search giant "hire the brightest and best engineers in the UK and put them together in a highly creative, relaxed and exciting environment,"

"We don't see these perks as distractions. They're a fundamental part of the innovation process here," he added.

According to the paper, however true that is, Google has made sure that staff themselves certainly think it's essential.
