DUBAI: Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), the world’s first integrated healthcare free zone, on Sunday announced the launch of Dh 350 million (Rs 420 crore) Al Razi, a complex of multi-specialty clinical facility, to attract about 1500 healthcare professionals from the world over.

The DHCC was launched in November 2002 to fill the gap between Europe and South East Asia by establishing a regional gateway for customers and patients to receive world-class healthcare and to enjoy first class medical and wellness services. But top Indian medical consultants said Dubai would not pose a threat to India’s medical tourism in the near future.

“India offers medicare at 10 per cent of the cost in the West and Dubai or no other city can match that. Technology and medical expertise, is our unique selling proposition”, said Raza Siddiqui, Consultant Health Care, ETA Ascon, a top business group here told DNA.

S Gopinath, formerly with Apollo Hospitals and now in charge of the NMC Specialty Hospital Dubai, said India may lose out on some Arab clientele to the upcoming facilities here but the higher cost in Dubai will ultimately persuade many to go to India. He also agreed with Siddiqui that in heart bypass and hip transplant surgeries Indian hospitals have no competition as far as the cost factor is concerned. But both said India will have to improve its hospitality and infrastructure sector to meet competition in medical tourism in the long run. Dubai Healthcare City is a clinical community of 4.1 million square feet which accommodates internationally renowned healthcare providers offering world-class standards in medicine and related disciplines.

“As a regional centre of excellence for medical services, medical education, and life science research and development in the Middle East, the Dubai Healthcare City will offer advanced medical techniques and applications,” said Ahmad Sharaf, Senior Vice President, Energy and Healthcare.

“Al Razi Medical Complex will bring together an integrated community of prominent healthcare providers from across the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the United States.” Mr. Sharaf added.

Al Razi Medical Complex, which signals DHCC’s continued expansion as an important regional hub for the healthcare industry, will be located within the Academic Medical Center containing the University Teaching Hospital, Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC), clinical research in the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research and other specialty hospitals.
