Prince Charles, reputedly one of the richest men in Britain, had to borrow money from officers protecting him on a trip abroad.

Charles found himself short of cash and had to borrow £3,000 from police officers escorting him to fork out expenses for travel, The Independent reported.

The paper said it was famous that the British Queen did not carry cash and it appears that this lack of liquidity had rubbed off on her eldest son and next in line to the throne.

The Prince of Wales returned nearly £2,744.34 to the Scotland Yard after his Royal Protection Team paid for "travel expenses" thought to be flights abroad.

Though the documents quoted by the paper did not indicate where the Prince got stranded without cash, Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, had visited Turkey and Uganda last month.

The heir to the throne paid back the money to Scotland Yard in December 2007, and the famous agency encashed the cheque days later, the newspaper said.

A spokeswoman for Scotland Yard said officers did occasionally lend VIPs they were protecting money, although she did not confirm the Charles incident.
