British prime minister Gordon Brown will remain in Northern Ireland on Wednesday morning to try to salvage a deal to keep the province's power-sharing government in place after making progress during all-night crisis talks, his office said.

"We continue to believe that there is scope for agreement on the elements that need to be in place to enable the completion of devolution in Northern Ireland," a spokesman for Brown said.

He said meetings will continue through the morning. Brown hosts a high-level meeting in London on Wednesday to help bolster Yemen's fight against al-Qaeda.

Gordon Brown and Irish prime minister Brian Cowen flew in unexpectedly on Monday to help rival Northern Irish parties Sinn Fein and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) overcome a dispute about when to transfer police and justice powers from London to Belfast.

Any failure to clinch a deal would be a setback to the Northern Ireland peace process, which ended three decades of violence.
