Bangladesh has asked the US authorities through the Interpol to deport a former army official convicted for assassinating the country's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
"The National Central Bureau (NCB), Interpol's regional office in Dhaka, has sent a letter to its Washington DC office seeking cooperation for deportation of fugitive Lt Col (retd) AM Rashed Chowdhury, a self-declared and convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," said The Daily Star.
The development comes days after Bangladesh's Supreme Court upheld the death sentence on 12 of the killers of Sheikh Mujibur after final appeal hearing.
Recently, Canada had ordered the deportation of another former army major convicted for assassinating Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after rejecting his asylum plea.
Sacked major Noor Chowdhury was ordered to be deported from Canada after his request for asylum was rejected, law minister Shafique Ahmed has said.
"Chowdhury's passport has been impounded and given to our embassy officials in Ottawa," Ahmed has said.
Meanwhile, a senior Congressman said the US should help Bangladesh to bring back the convicted killers of the country's founding president.
"US should work with your country (Bangladesh) to find them and have them going court in this country to face extradition proceedings," The Daily Star has quoted Congressman and co-chairman of Bangladesh American Congressional Caucus Peter King as saying.
