Bahrain supports Egyptian people's choice: Report

Bahrain said it respected the choice of the Egyptian people which forced the resignation of former president Hosni Mubarak, pro-government Al Watan newspaper said on Saturday.

The island kingdom, where a Sunni minority reigns over a Shi'ite majority, said it was confident in the ability of the Higher Military Council to establish security and stability, in remarks published by the paper.

On Friday, Mubarak's 30 years of autocratic rule ended after 18 days of street protests, just four weeks after Tunisians toppled their own ageing strongman.

Bahrain also said it was confident of "the continuation of Egypt's leading role in the common Arab work and defending the interests of the (Arab) nation" and that it was interested in developing its relationship with Egypt, Al Watan said.

On Friday, Bahrain's king decided to give 1,000 Bahrain dinars ($2,653) to each Bahraini family, the latest step that the Sunni rulers have taken to appease majority Shi'ites before protests planned next week.
