The official spokesman of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has strongly refuted media reports that the president had suffered facial paralysis due to a mild stroke, adding that all his medical tests and reports are completely normal and he will be back in Pakistan within a week’s time.

According to Farhatullah Babar, the presidential spokesperson, it is unfortunate that President Zardari’s sudden ailment has led to a plethora of nasty rumours. The spokesperson added that the president had travelled to Dubai following symptoms related to a pre-existing heart condition. “He will remain under observation there for a few more days and return to resume his normal functions as advised by the doctors,” he added.

Meanwhile, Zardari reportedly told Hamid Mir, a popular news anchor, that he is “fine” and “will return soon”. “I did not want to leave. My children and friends and the prime minister insisted that I go for a checkup,” he told Mir, who repeated it on Geo TV.

Zardari seemed to acknowledge the speculations about his illness. “Those that run from the country run with their kids,” Mir quoted the president as saying. “My son is in Pakistan. I left him there. My enemies will be disappointed.”

Zardari likely suffered a transient ischemic attack, sources said on Friday, which can produce stroke-like symptoms but no lasting damage to the brain. “The MRI is clear, but we suspect it may have been that (a transient ischemic attack),” said one party official who requested anonymity.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said Zardari was out of intensive care and “making satisfactory progress so far as his health was concerned”.
