Ann Romney, the wife of the Republican presidential hopeful, hit back in disgust on Thursday after Democrats used footage of her Olympic dressage horse to mock her husband's refusal to release his tax returns.

The advert, which used video snippets of the prancing horse to ask why Mitt Romney "dances around" questions over his financial affairs, raised memories of Romney's battle against multiple sclerosis which included using horses as therapy.

"It's like, really?" the 63 year-old said, laughing scornfully, in an interview with ABC News. "There's so many people out of work right now. They're going to try everything, they're going to throw spaghetti at the wall." The advert was the latest in a string of attacks designed to paint Romney and his wife as rich elitists who use off-shore tax havens and have no concept of the suffering of ordinary Americans.

Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor who has been tipped among the favourites to be Romney's vice-presidential running mate, led the outcry, saying it was "really low" for Democrats to lampoon the pastime that had helped Romney return to health. The Democrat National Committee quickly backed down, apologising for the film which crossed the "red line" that keeps the candidates' family members off-limits.

"Our use of the Romneys' dressage horse was not meant to offend Romney in any way, and we regret it if it did," said a DNC spokesman.

Romney, who will travel to London next week with her husband to attend the Olympics opening ceremony, said that horses had become her passion and joy in life after she was diagnosed with MS nearly 14 years ago.

"Horses have been my therapy, they've been my joy, my passion in life. I love horses - they have been my companion through my dark hours as I was recovering, they gave me strength and joy and hope," she said.
