Eight persons, including five Taliban militants and three civilians, were killed today and three more rebels injured during an operation by security forces in northwest Pakistan, police said.
Taliban commander Bakht Farzand, who carried a reward of Rs1 crore on his head, and two other wanted militants, Shina Commando and Mian Gul, were among those killed in the operation in remote Pattan area of Kohistan district.
A man, a woman and young girl were also killed when security forces stormed the house in which the militants were hiding, police officials said.
One soldier and a policeman were injured in the operation. The three injured militants were captured by the security forces.
Police officials said security forces raided the house after receiving a tip off that the militants were hiding there. The militants had forcibly occupied the house and taken its residents hostage, they said.
Farzand belonged to Matta area of Swat valley, a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban.
