4 Pak troopers involved in unarmed youth's killing handed over to police

Four paramilitary troopers involved in the killing of an unarmed youth in a park in the Pakistani port city of Karachi were handed over to police today, officials said.

Two troopers from the Pakistan Rangers, Shahid Zafar and Muhammed Afzal, were handed over to police earlier.

A court in Karachi yesterday remanded them to police custody for five days in connection with the killing which was filmed by a TV cameraman and broadcast on news channels.

One of a group of paramilitary troopers shot Sarfraz Shah, 18, at the Benazir Bhutto Park in Karachi on Wednesday.

He succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Officials alleged Shah was an armed robber but the footage on television showed he had no weapons on him when he was shot by the trooper.

The Supreme Court has taken suo moto notice of the incident and ordered transfer of the Sindh police chief and the provincial head of the Pakistan Rangers.

A senior police officer appointed by the apex court to conduct a probe into the incident will record the statements of the paramilitary troopers tomorrow.

The gruesome footage of the shooting showed the youth wearing black trousers and a blue shirt pleading for his life as a trooper shoots him twice in the park.

Police have also taken custody of Afsar Khan, the man who dragged Shah over to the paramilitary troopers and later filed a criminal case accusing him of robbery.
