Thirty people were killed while several others injured when a truck carrying wheat flour rammed into a passenger bus in Nigeria's southern state of Ogun.

Most of those killed in the accident, which took place at Mobalufun junction along the Ijebu Ode-Sagamu expressway yesterday, were bus passengers, eyewitnesses said.

"The injured have been taken to the General Hospital and Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu for treatment while the dead were deposited at a morgue" said Ogun State police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

Evacuation of the victims was carried out in a joint operation by Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials, the police and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency.

Violation of traffic norms, coupled with bad road networks has led to loss of hundreds of lives along the Nigerian roads.

Last week, the FRSC had organised a nation-wide campaign to create awareness about traffic security among people.
